    July 2009 (09NB-205)

The State of Washington (U.S.) has expanded the scope of products expected to meet its energy efficiency code requirements.

Under a bill passed earlier this year by both chambers of the Washington State Legislature, certain additional products manufactured on or after January 1, 2010 may not be sold or offered in the state on or after January 1, 2011 unless the efficiency of the new product meets or exceeds the energy efficiency standards set forth in RCW (Revised Code of Washington) 19.260.040.

The products now newly subject to Washington’s energy efficiency standards include:

      > Wine chillers designed and sold for use by an individual
      > Hot water dispensers and mini-tank electric water heaters
      > Bottle-type water dispensers and point-of-use water dispensers
      > Pool heaters, residential pool pumps, and portable electric spas
      > Tub spout diverters
      > Commercial hot food holding cabinets

At the same time, several other products have been removed from the scope of the state’s energy efficiency requirements since they are now pre-empted by Federal law. Those products include metal halide lamp fixtures, external power supplies, unit heaters, and commercial clothes washers.
